Pet portraits are becoming increasingly common across the art world. Who doesn’t love a beautiful image, painting, or drawing of their furry, feathered, or scaley loved one? I have been trying my hand at pet portraits over the past few months and I have really enjoyed them.
Our first cat, Reddington My childhood dog, Hershey My brother’s dog, Roy My college rabbit, Hazel
One of the most beautiful things about pet portraits (and portraits of people) is capturing the likeness of those we have lost. I was able to do that with three of these paintings. My parents particularly enjoyed the painting of our dog Hershey.
I found pet portraits to be a bit of a challenge as well. Capturing fur and scales can be a challenge, especially in animals with dark-colored fur. The fur of my brother’s dog was also a challenge, because of all of the colors and patterns in the fur.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed these paintings and I hope to have the opportunity to create more pet portraits in the future.
